Santiago, Chile (November 21, 2017) – Chile continues to gain recognition as travel experts’ top choice destination. This time it was Lonely Planet, one of the most renowned travel guides in the world with over 145 publications, which placed Chile at the top of its Best in Travel 2018” collection.

The travel guide, which offers content in more than 14 languages and has over 13 million followers on social media, published its anticipated collection of the top 10 travel destinations in 2018. This list names the countries that should be on every traveler’s to-do list, and this year, Chile has earned first place on that list.

This victory is twice as sweet, since Chile is the only South American country to earn a spot on the list and ranks higher than the other iconic tourist destinations selected, including South Korea, Portugal, Djibouti, New Zealand, Malta, Georgia, Mauricio, China and South Africa.

“This distinction is big news for Chile and reaffirms the government’s successful campaign to market the country as a must-see international tourism destination. And the statistics confirm this as well, with a record-breaking influx of 5.5 million foreign tourists in 2016,” said Undersecretary of Tourism, Javiera Montes.

Sernatur Director Marcela Cabezas also asserted that, “recognition by Lonely Planet is an award that all Chileans can feel proud of, as it highlights both the natural beauty of our country and the outstanding hospitality of its people. This acknowledgement comes on the heels of our recent distinction as South America’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination 2017 by the World Tourism Association.”

The annual selection of the “Lonely Planet Best in Travel” – already in its 13th edition – involves the guide’s most experienced travelers and takes into consideration hundreds of recommended destinations. Its selection criteria, including current events, innovative travel offers and the surprise factor, help to decide which places will be included in the inspirational annual list.

How To Plan The Perfect Trip To Santiago

Planning a trip to Santiago?  Don’t know where to begin?

With so much to see and do it is often difficult to fit it all in especially if you have limited time.  This is why guests come to Chile Dream Tours.  We help you see it all and get the most out of your stay.  In just a few days, we can show you the best of the Santiago area.

Here are our “must dos” for the perfect trip to Santiago in just four days:

Day #1:   Santiago – Chile’s Capital

Plaza de Armas and Metropolitan Cathedral, Santiago, Chile. Discover Santiago. Shore Excursion

For a great start to your stay, we recommend our Private Santiago City Landmarks and Neighborhoods Tour, which includes and goes beyond the city center to historical sites, San Cristobal Hill, the diverse multicultural neighborhoods, and El Pueblito Handicrafts Village.

[Note: For those guests arriving to Chile in the early morning, this is a perfect tour to begin your trip.  We will pick you up and bring you to your hotel for free.]

We start by visiting San Cristobal Hill where we will take a cable car to the summit and enjoy the most amazing panoramic views of the entire city and Andes Mountains.

Afterwards, we will drive through the bohemian neighborhood of Bellavista before arriving in the historic city center where we will see Florestal Park, the Museum of Fine Arts, Plaza de Armas (Santiago’s main square), the Cathedral, City Hall, Historic Post Office, Old Congress Building, Palacio La Moneda (The Government House), National Theater, and Santa Lucía Hill.  Originally named Cerro Huelén by the Mapuche Indians, Santa Lucía Hill is where Pedro de Valdivia founded the city in 1541.  We will also pass through the vibrant bohemian neighborhood of Lastarria before leaving the downtown area.

We will then drive to the eastern side of the city, to the financial heart of Santiago, known for its modern buildings and impressive glass skyscrapers, passing by Costanera Center, South America’s tallest building.  You will see why this area is known as “Sanhattan” among the locals.

Then we will visit the upscale neighborhood of Las Condes and stop at El Pueblito de Los Dominicos, a beautiful handicraft market in the shadow of the Andes designed to resemble a colonial village, where you will see local artisans actually working in their trade.  Located next to the beautiful San Vicente Ferrer Church, a national monument, the village is a “must see” in Santiago. The shops built with clay and straw, are home to more than 180 artisans, representing the best and most complete showing of Chilean handicraft.

In the evening, you may want to enjoy a folkloric dinner show to discover the rich culture of song and dance from the different regions of Chile.  We recommend the dinner shows at Los Buenos Muchachos and Bali Hai Restaurant.

Day #2:   Valparaiso, Viña del Mar & Casablanca Wine Valley

Today, it is time to venture out of the city and head to the coast.  No trip to Chile is complete without visiting the colorful coastal cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar.

Valparaiso skyline with historic Lutheran Church. Discover Valparaiso

Our Valparaiso, Viña del Mar and Casas del Bosque Vineyard Tour begins with your hotel pick up and then an hour and a half drive to the Chilean coastline.

We start the drive along the coast in Concon, known for its seaside restaurants and surf shops.  We pass by the impressive Concon Sand Dunes where we will have panoramic views of Valparaiso Harbor.

The tour continues by the popular beach town of Reñaca where on most days we will spot sea lions lying on the coastal rocks.  We then drive through Viña del Mar, Chile’s “Garden City,” where you will see the city’s landmarks, including the Flower Clock and Casino, a “Moai” statue from Easter Island, as well as the city’s pristine beaches.

The city of Viña del Mar was founded in 1874, by engineer Jose Francisco Vergara Echevers, and has grown into Chile’s most luxurious resort town, attracting visitors from all over the world with a tropical atmosphere, white sand beaches, and an abundance of gourmet restaurants.

While Viña del Mar’s celebrity has brought it many sleek, modern buildings and hotels, the character of the town is set by its many charming colonial houses.  Viña is also famous for its International Music Festival held every year on the third week of February and lasts for five days. It is very popular among Chileans and the Spanish music world and effectively marks the end of the summer season.

Afterwards, we reach our main destination, Plaza Sotomayor, the heart of  Valparaiso.  Nicknamed “The Jewel of the Pacific”, Valparaiso was declared a world heritage site based upon its improvised urban design and unique architecture. In 1996, the World Monuments Fund declared Valparaiso’s unusual system of funicular lifts (steeply inclined carriages) one of the world’s 100 most endangered historical treasures. Valparaiso was declared a World Heritage Site in 2003. Built upon dozens of steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Valparaiso has a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and cultural legacy.

We will first go on a 30-minute boat ride around the harbor.  Then, we will take an old funicular up to Concepcion and Alegre Hills.  Bohemian and colorful, Valparaiso’s maze of hills has long inspired poets and writers. You will discover something new at every turn – a gem of a building, a remarkable art gallery or some little gastronomic ‘find’.  Revel in the architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage City. Stroll along its narrow streets, climb its endless staircases, and enjoy panoramic views from its many lofty lookout points.

After exploring Valparaiso, the wine tour begins as we will journey inland to the Casablanca Valley where we will stop at Casas del Bosque Vineyard for a tour and wine tasting.  Today, Casas del Bosque is one of the most important wineries in Chile.

In 1993, a family of Italian descendants established the winery. The large old pine and olive trees, and small white houses of adobe, define the name “Casas del Bosque” (Houses of the Forest).

Currently, the vineyard has 580 acres of planted vines, exclusively dedicated to the production of cool-climate varieties of wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Syrah.  One of Casas del Bosque’s biggest strengths is its soil. In the hills, red clay composites of volcanic origin sit on top of decomposed granite layers formed 110 million years ago beneath the Pacific Ocean. This soil gives their wines the unique characteristic sea salt flavor.

Casas del Bosque has gained great prestige over the years and in 2010 became the Best Vineyard to Visit in Chile. Enjoy an informative tour, browse their gift shop and relax in their outdoor lounge area!

Day #3:   Andes Mountains

In Santiago, from practically any vantage point, you will see the imposing Andes, including Cerro El Plomo rising to 17,783 feet (5,432 meters) with a hanging glacier on top, visible from the city.

There are many ways to explore the Andes.  One, you can visit the Maipo Canyon, where we offer a variety of adventure activities, including whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and zip lining/canopy.   After each activity we bring you to Concha y Toro Winery to end the day relaxing and enjoying a delicious wine tasting.

Another way to see the Andes is visiting the Inca Lagoon at Portillo, South America´s oldest ski center.   We call this tour our Andes Adventure!

Inca Lagoon from the Portillo Hotel - Andes Mountains

After your hotel pick up, we set out on an adventure into the heart of the Andes Mountains.  Admire the scenic surroundings as we head towards the town of Los Andes. On the way, we pass by the Monument to the Battle of Chacabuco, which led to Chile’s Independence.  Afterwards, on a clear day, we will start to see views of Mount Aconcagua, the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, at 22,841 feet above sea level.

We continue deeper into the Aconcagua Valley and then into the middle of the Andes on a windy road known as “El Caracol” (The Snail), to an altitude of almost 9,000 feet above sea level.  You will feel your heart race with excitement as your driver expertly maneuvers sharp bends and curves.  Aside from stunning mountain scenery on this tour, you will also be able to see remnants of the ancient Inca Trail used by the Inca to cross the Andes.  The Trans-Andean Railway would later be built following this trail in an intricate route winding between tunnels through steep cliffs.

Just miles away from the border with Argentina, we reach our destination: “Laguna del Inca” (Inca Lagoon). Engross yourself in tales of the lagoon’s legendary past and learn about myths and the history behind this sacred body of water.  On the lagoon’s edge is Portillo, the oldest ski resort in South America. Here, you can have a cup of coffee or tea while taking in the spectacular views of the glittering lagoon surrounded by the peaks of the Andes.

Day #4:   Nature

After discovering Santiago, the Andes, the Pacific, and Chile’s wine, on this last day, we recommend spending it with nature.

Our Chilean Treasures Nature Tour is one of our most popular excursions where you will have an opportunity to get up close to alpacas, the pride of the Andes, and then head to the coast to spot penguins on Cachagua Island.

After your hotel pick up, we venture to the countryside where we will visit the largest privately-owned alpaca farm in Chile. Indulge in the luxury of nature and discover this beautiful animal up close. You will see the entire alpaca wool production process and enjoy a broad selection of exclusive creations and handmade alpaca wool items that portray the patrimony and spirit of the Andean culture, which is the World of Alpacas.

We then continue to the Pacific coastline to the town of Cachagua.  We will be a stone’s throw from Cachagua Island, known by locals as “Penguin Island” where on most days we will be able to catch glimpses of penguins by the naked eye or using binoculars.

Cachagua Island was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1979. It is a perfect spot for landscape and nature gazing!  It is an island of 4.5 hectares 100 meters from the coast.  It is one of the five most important nesting sites of the Humboldt penguin in Chile. The island also has an important diversity of bird species, including chungungos, pelicans, seagulls and yecos.

After viewing Penguin Island, we will walk on a beautifully carved pathway to a small cove with gorgeous views of the ocean.

Afterwards, we will stop for lunch in the quiet seaside resort town of Zapallar.

This tour is a “must do” for anyone wanting to experience the essence of Chile!

The above is just one way to plan your trip to Santiago.  We offer a wide variety of tours, which you can find on the Chile Dream Tours website and we can also customize and tailor any of the tours to best meet the interests and schedule of our guests.

The Two Best Horseback Riding Experiences From Santiago
Maipo Canyon Horseback

A title

Image Box text

When the Spanish arrived in South America with their horses, the animal was unknown on the continent, but the natives – particularly the Mapuche of southern Chile – soon realized the advantages which horses implied. The incorporation of the horse was instrumental in the Mapuches’ centuries-long resistance to the Conquistadors, and the spread of their culture into the Argentine pampa.

Today, the widespread use of horses is one of the most salient characteristics of Chilean rural life. Motorized vehicles still haven’t replaced horses as the primary vehicle of the Chilean cowboy, or huaso.

The Chilean rodeo – entirely different from the sport practiced in the U.S. – is a much-anticipated annual event in towns large and small, while thoroughbred breeding and racing has a long and prominent history in the Central Valley. Horses are available for hourly or daily rental on nearly every beach and in many national parks. El Caballo Chileno is ever present, much talked about and admired.

Participants in horseback riding in Chile will find that they have engaged in a cultural experience as much as an athletic one, guided by local “arrieros” with their unique clothing and equipment, local knowledge and customs, who provide a glimpse at one of the most traditional sectors of modern Chilean society, a slice of living history.

Exploring Chile’s many trails on horseback is one of the greatest pleasures for travelers in Chile.

Horseback Riding in the Andes Mountains - Cabalgata en los Andes - Passeio a cavalo nos Andes

Join us for a spectacular horseback riding adventure in the Cajon del Maipo Valley in the Andes Mountains.

After a two-hour drive from Chile’s capital of Santiago, into the Andes Mountains, we will arrive at a ranch in a small town on the banks of the Maipo River.  The ranch has more than 25 years of experience in ecotourism in Chile with 8,000 acres of mountain ranges, valleys, springs, and waterfalls.

You will be guided by “arrieros” (local cowboys) as you take in the stunning vistas and admire the abundant flora and fauna from horseback. You will scale narrow mountain trails and have a short break on a plateau while enjoying the gorgeous surroundings.  You may even see some amazing Chilean condors flying high in the sky.  The riding time is approximately 2 hours. There is no experience needed for this horseback riding adventure.  We use small but robust Chilean “criollo” horses that make everyone feel comfortable.

After horseback riding, you will have time for lunch (not included) followed by a visit to the Concha y Toro Wine Vineyard in the picturesque town of Pirque for a tour and wine tasting.

Internationally-renowned Concha y Toro Vineyard dates back to 1883. The founder was Don Melchor Concha y Toro who brought the first vines from the Bordeaux region in France to Chile that grew prosperously in the Maipo River basin. Walk around the gardens of the summer residence of the Concha y Toro family, discover the variety garden, visit their cellars, and taste a selection of three of their fine wines.

#2:   Pacific Horseback Riding on Beach and Sand Dunes

Experience an amazing 3-hour horseback ride on the beach and sand dunes with stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Andes!

Horseback ride on sand dunes in Mantagua

This is a fun day trip on the Pacific Coast that goes beyond sightseeing!

We will venture to the town of Mantagua for a 3-hour horseback ride along the beach and nearby Ritoque Sand Dunes, crossing little streams from the Aconcagua River which empty here into the Pacific Ocean after flowing all the way from Mount Aconcagua in the Andes, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere.

Chile started growing vines in the 16th century. With a steady increase in immigrants from Spain, winemaking flourished in the country. Towards the 20th century, a large number of French families flocked to this South American nation and brought along with them their love for good wines and their knowledge and skills for producing them.  This is how Chile started its love affair with fine wines and is today the 5th largest exporter of wines in the world.

Chile Dream Tours recommends visiting the following vineyards in Chile’s major wine-producing valleys:

#1 – MAIPO VALLEY

The Maipo Valley is about 30 km (20 miles) south of Santiago, and is perhaps best known for being home to the major exporter of Concha y Toro. But it is not all big names and large production. Here, in the shadow of the soaring Andes, sits one of Chile’s most photogenic wine regions, with many smaller producers making high-scoring reds. Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme in the valley, benefitting from long sunny days and dropping evening temperatures that favor flavor development. The recently rediscovered Carmenere also does well here.

Concha y Toro Vineyard

Summer home and gardens of Don Melchor de Concha y Toro at Concha y Toro Vineyard

Latin America’s largest wine grower, Concha y Toro produces one of the most widely-recognized lines in the world, Casillero del Diablo. It is one of Chile’s oldest wineries, founded in 1883 by Don Melchor de Concha y Toro.  Don Melchor brought the first vines from the Bordeaux region in France to Chile that grew prosperously in the Maipo River basin. Walk around the gardens of the summer residence of the Concha y Toro family, discover the variety garden, visit their cellars, and taste a selection of three of their fine wines.

Santa Rita Vineyard dates back to the 1880s and played an important role in Chilean history as the site of one of the battles during the War for Independence. Admire the old hacienda-style Estate house and enjoy your wine while you stroll through the old cellars.  You will see the grape variety garden, vineyards, winemaking and cellaring facilities, and bottling process, visiting “Bodega 1” – the winery’s first cellar and the “Cellar of the 120 Patriots”.  You will discover the exciting story that gives 120 its name. The tour ends with a tasting of Reserva and Gran Reserva wines.  After the tour, you can visit the neighboring “Museo Andino” (Andean Museum), which contains a special collection of pre-Columbian pottery, textiles and other artifacts.

Chile Dream Tours visits Santa Rita Vineyard on the following tour:

Cousiño Macul Vineyard

Wine cellar at Cousino Macul Vineyard - Santiago City and Wine Private Tour

By Chilean standards, Cousiño Macul is as ancient as it gets – the winery was founded in 1856, and has the distinction of still being run by the founding family. It is also home to the first vines ever planted in Chile, in 1546. The original winery has been swallowed up by the urban mass of Santiago, but the facilities, dating back to 1872, are still very much worth visiting.

Chile Dream Tours visits Cousiño Macul Vineyard on the following tour:

Haras de Pirque Vineyard

Main building at Haras de Pirque Vineyard in the Maipo Valley

The visit starts on the main terrace of the wine cellar where the beautiful valley of Pirque and the majestic Andes Mountains can be appreciated. Moving inside the horse-shoe shaped cellar, visitors get to know the winemaking and barrel-aging process, followed by a tasting of three wines – Albaclara Sauvignon Blanc, Reserva de Propiedad and Hussonet Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva in their memorable tasting room.

Chile Dream Tours visits Haras de Pirque Vineyard on the following tour:

Aquitania Vineyard

Entrance to Aquitania Vineyard with Andes Mountains in background. Boutique Wine Tour

Aquitania focuses on producing high-quality wines in limited quantities.  Visitors have the opportunity to observe the entire process of wine production, where modern equipment is used and traditional craftsmanship, such as the manual labeling of bottles.

The tour begins at the lookout of the winery, where you have a panoramic view of the vineyard. This is followed by a close-up look at the vines to appreciate their state depending on the season. The tour continues with a visit to the wine cellar, barrel room, bottle storage room and labeling sector. The tour ends with a tasting of their Reserve wines.

Undurraga Vineyard

Undurraga

Founded in 1885 by Don Francisco Undurraga Vicuna, this is one of the oldest wineries in Chile.

Located in the middle of the Maipo Valley, in the Santa Ana Estate, here you will visit one of the pioneer vineyards in the viticulture of Chile. With more than 130 years of experience and innovation, Undurraga Winery invites you to know how unique wines are produced, from specific origins, which reflect the best of the terroirs and valleys of Chile.

Visit and discover the centenary trajectory of the vineyard, deciphering through a glass, the enigmas, flavors, aromas, and history immersed within the fields.

#2 – CASABLANCA VALLEY

The Casablanca Valley is located between Santiago and the cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, making it an easy spot to visit from any of these three locations. There are wine producers large and small, along the highway and deep in hidden corners of the valley, in structures from Greek-temple inspired “casonas” to humble shipping containers.

Chile’s history of cool-climate viticulture in this valley began less than 30 years ago, when innovative winemakers started planting here. Chardonnay from this region is very popular, but Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are picking up speed. There are many microclimates in the small sub valleys, with small creeks, rises and varied terriors making some of Chile’s most celebrated wines.

Casas del Bosque Vineyard

Main building at Viña Casas del Bosque

Today, Casas del Bosque is one of the most important wineries in Chile.

In 1993, a family of Italian descendants established the winery. The large old pine and olive trees, and small white houses of adobe, define the name “Casas del Bosque” (Houses of the Forest).

This soil gives their wines the unique characteristic sea salt flavor.

Casas del Bosque has gained great prestige over the years and in 2010 became the Best Vineyard to Visit in Chile. Enjoy an informative tour, browse their gift shop and relax in their outdoor lounge area!

Emiliana Vineyard

Vina Emiliana

Emiliana is the world’s largest organic winery!  Founded in 1986 by the Guilisasti family, the winery grew rapidly over the last three decades and today owns more than 800 hectares of certified organic vineyards out of which they produce 580,000 cases of organic wine.  Emiliana’s wines are exported to no less than 60 countries. The Guilisastis are one of Chile’s most influential wine-making families. Next to Emiliana Vineyard, they also own Concha y Toro, one of the country’s largest wineries.

Do you like animals? If your answer is yes, visiting Emiliana will have an extra dose of fun for you. To maintain biodiversity, the presence and interaction of native animals are essential components of this process.   The animals are the ones who give a warm welcome to visitors.  Alpacas, peacocks, sheep, chickens; each has its very own position and importance. During a walk through the vineyard, guests are given a short lecture about the variety of grapevines, the terroir and the geography of the valley, which mainly favors the cultivation of green grapes.  The tour will be followed by a tasting of their delicious wines and an opportunity to browse the wine shop.

Chile Dream Tours visits Emiliana Vineyard on the following tour:

Bodegas RE Vineyard

Large clay wine barrels at Bodegas RE Vineyard

Bodegas RE is a small family vineyard. Here, they produce wine with a unique concept, which consists of recreating, reinventing and revealing beauty, complexity, structure, and innovation. The owners keep the traditions of their ancestors and age noble wines in clay jars to show that they can make wines of excellence combining these ancient procedures with current knowledge of viticulture and oenology.  The “RE” stands for “Rebirth”, “Reinvention” and “Rejuvenation” – exactly how you will feel after visiting this lovely vineyard in the Casablanca Valley!

Chile Dream Tours visits Bodegas RE Vineyard on the following tours:

Attilio & Mochi Vineyard

Wine tour at Attilio and Mochi Vineyard

Attilio & Mochi Vineyard is a small boutique winery where you will enjoy a personalized tour by the vineyard’s owners followed by a tasting of their premium wines.

Angela Mochi and Marcos Attilio are passionate winemakers.  They are a Brazilian couple who have been in the wine business since 1999.

In 2011, they left their home country to build a dream in the Casablanca Valley.  They planted a small vineyard with 8 varieties, some “rare”, including the first Grenache in the Valley. They make high-quality wines, with a cool climate, on a human scale and that speak of their terroir.

Their hands are in every part of the process, from growing the vine to bottling. They are “green”, aware of the importance of natural resources.   They care about the environment, their neighbors, and are focused on sustainability.

They constantly challenge themselves to show lesser known aspects of the Chilean wine mosaic and replace the emphasis on “quality for the price” with “real quality.”  They are active members of MOVI, the Movement of Independent Winemakers of Chile, and of Casablanca OFF, a group that promotes the development of small wine producers in the Valley.

This is the tour to take if you are interested in learning about starting a wine vineyard and any aspect of producing wine.

Chile Dream Tours visits Attilio & Mochi Vineyard on the following tour:

Matetic Vineyard

Wine cellar at Matetic Vineyard

The history of Matetic began in 1999 with the challenge of planting Syrah in a cold climate zone and becoming a benchmark of wines, focused on quality and excellence. They since have created wines showing the great potential of coastal Chile.

The mission of Matetic is to produce wines with a sense of origin and authenticity, under processes that respect the environment. At the same time are an innovative vineyard, with a high quality, avant-garde and 100% sustainable wine production.

At Matetic Vineyard, the visit begins at the wine cellar reception. This is the perfect place to learn all about the history of the vineyard, organic and biodynamic agriculture, and the process of winemaking, while enjoying panoramic views of the Corralillo vines. The tank rooms, the beautiful, peaceful aging room and the architecture of the winery are all highlights of the visit. The tour ends with a wine tasting, either in the underground tasting room or on the outdoor terrace overlooking the vinyard.

Chile Dream Tours visits Matetic Vineyard on the following tours:

Viñamar Vineyard

Guests on large chair in front of Viñamar

Viñamar was founded to develop a line of sparkling wines aimed at the most demanding markets.  Each of its sparkling wines and wines pay tribute to the main virtue of this valley, which is its beneficial proximity to the sea. Thanks to these perfect conditions, together with their passion for sparkling wine, Viñamar has become world-renowned for its excellence and quality.

Chile Dream Tours visits Viñamar Vineyard on the following tour:

#3 – ACONCAGUA VALLEY

Traveling out of Santiago to the northeast, it is impossible not to notice the change in terrain. Softer, more undulating hills give way to sharper rocks and stronger sun as you drive through tunnels built through bedrock to arrive in the Aconcagua Valley. Aconcagua has its own Denomination of Origin, and it is named for the province and the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, Mount Aconcagua. It is partially the meltwater from snowcapped Aconcagua that irrigates the land the grapes grow on, and much of the rest of the region’s success is due to it having one of the warmest and longest growing seasons. While for a Chilean wine valley, it is not a very extensive area, Aconcagua is definitely in the category of “small but mighty.” It is known worldwide for its hugely successful, high-scoring reds, such as Viña Errázuriz’ Seña wine. Smaller winemakers also benefit from the excellent conditions here, making blends that include “tempranillo” and other grapes that are lesser-known in Chile.

San Esteban Vineyard

Petroglyphs at San Esteban Vineyard

Beautifully situated along the Aconcagua River, San Esteban is famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere, among others. San Esteban is a family-owned and operated producer of high-quality wines and table grapes. The vineyard exports to more than 20 countries.  Their grapes are planted along the banks of the Aconcagua River and on the surrounding hillsides. This geography creates a micro-climate ideally suited for wine and table grape production, with a soil quality that rivals the best wine-growing regions in South America.  Enjoy a tour of the facilities and learn about the winery’s method of planting vines on the hillsides of the Andes. Then top off your visit with a tasting of their wines.

Located on the property of San Esteban Vineyard is Paidahuén Archaeological Park.  Paidahuén is an isolated hill located along the northern bank of the Aconcagua River in the rural town of San Esteban.  At the top of Paidahuén, visitors will appreciate large rocks adorned with petroglyphs. Full of symbolism and mystery, these rock drawings are the work of native populations dating back 450 to 1,000 years ago.  The true meaning of the petroglyphs is unknown, but research has demonstrated that they were not made randomly.

From the top of the hill, visitors may ponder unanswered questions while taking the natural context into consideration. Specifically, the relationship between Paidahuén Hill and other peaks in the valley, the hill’s strategic positioning, and the prevalence of north-facing petroglyphs are some of the observations that can help understand the importance of this site.

Chile Dream Tours visits San Esteban Vineyard on the following tours:

Errazuriz Vineyard

Main Building at Errazuriz Vineyard. San Esteban and Errazuriz Wine Tour

At Errazuriz Winery you will enjoy this beautiful vineyard nestled on the western slopes of the Andes Mountains.  Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870. With his great vision for the future and his innovative, pioneering spirit, he planted the first French grape varieties in the Aconcagua Valley. His initiative and creativity were handed down to future generations and, in just over a century, his descendants consolidated the winery and positioned their wines among the world’s most noteworthy. Here, visitors are invited to get to know some of the main landmarks that have shaped the history of this family vineyard, currently one of the best examples of successful winemaking in Chile.  You will visit the underground cellars, walk around the vineyard, and head to a lookout point and the new Icon Wine Cellar for a wonderful wine tasting of the vineyard’s reserves.

#4 –  COLCHAGUA VALLEY

Colchagua is home to what many people think of as “Chile’s Napa Valley,” specifically the area surrounding the city of Santa Cruz, a perfect getaway for visitors to Chile, and popular among locals as well. Colchagua was originally part of a larger valley system, but the Denomination of Origin system classified the southern end as Colchagua.  We typically think of this area as being home to Cabernet Sauvignon, but these days Syrah and Carmenere are catching up, and Chilean Malbec, a recent innovation that makes the wine quite different from that of their neighbors in Argentina. Wineries in Colchagua are also planting further out towards the coast in recent years, taking advantage of the colder temperatures to make some notable cool-climate reds.

Santa Cruz Vineyard

Cable car ride at Santa Cruz Vineyard in Colchagua Valley

During the tour of Santa Cruz Vineyard, you will learn how to differentiate their vines.  Then, we will continue to their winery to learn about the wine-making process and enjoy the tasting of their delicious Gran Reserva wines. Afterwards, you can take a gondola to the top of Chaman Hill overlooking the vineyard. There, you can walk around an open-air exhibit of Chile’s pre-Columbian cultures and learn how the Aymara, Mapuche and Rapa Nui cultures lived in harmony with nature and their environment through their rituals and beliefs, but especially, you will meet their guides Machi and Chaman, the inspiration behind the vineyard’s wines.  You will even see alpacas!

Viu Manent Vineyard

Horse carriage at Viu Manent Vineyard

Viu Manent is a winery owned by the Viu family. It was founded in 1935 when Catalonian immigrant Miguel Viu-García and his two sons Agustín and Miguel Viu-Manent founded Bodegas Viu in Santiago. They bottled and sold wine in the local market under the “Vinos Viu” brand.

In 1966, Miguel Viu Manent fulfilled his long-time dream of making his own wines when he acquired Hacienda San Carlos de Cunaco in Colchagua. This traditional estate included 150 hectares of vineyards with noble, pre-phylloxera vines, as well as a winery and manor house.

Today, Viu Manent is a model for wine tourism in Chile.  Climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage for a remarkable experience visiting the historic Malbec Hall, gardens, and wine cellars.  Explore the wine shop and handicraft emporium.  The visit ends with a tasting of the vineyard’s best wines. Internationally renowned for the quality of its wines, Viu Manent is particularly famous for its Malbec.

Montes Vineyard

Vina Montes

With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine in 1988, Montes became the first premium winery of Chile.  The premise, a clear belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, made them a benchmark for other wineries to follow.  Its original four partners’ total involvement and the continuous help of the Angels that decorate their labels was key to their success.

Two decades later, Montes is one of the most important wineries of Chile were Aurelio Montes continues leading the winemaking area with the same passion as the day he started. Hard work and total focus on quality has led Montes to become the most successful and respected quality driven winery in Chile as they continue pioneering and breaking new grounds in winemaking.

Walk through their beautiful vineyards with a great view of the Valley.  Tour the mystical winery where the Premium and Ultra Premium wines are made: Montes Alpha M, Montes Folly, Purple Angel and Montes Alpha.  Visit the Barrel Room, where their best wines rest and mature accompanied by Gregorian Chants.  You can also go to the wine and souvenir store, where you will find all the Montes wine lines at special prices.

#5 – ELQUI VALLEY

Located in the Province of Coquimbo, the Elqui Valley is an arid region with crystal-clear skies, boasting some of the most important astronomical observatories in the world. The vineyards in this region have known how to seek out greenness in the mountains. The vines grow in extremely rustic soils that are a perfect environment for development. The leading varieties of the region are Syrah for red wines and Sauvignon Blanc among white wines.

Cavas del Valle Vineyard

Valle del Elqui

This boutique winery is run by a retired couple, Raymundo Piraces and Marlies Duerr, in a delightful, tasteful and elegant manner.  It is unique for several reasons. First, it is the northernmost vineyard in Chile (that means the winery with the strongest sun).  It is also the winery at the highest altitude in Chile, located 1,080 meters or 3,500 feet above sea level.  Cavas del Valle operates inside an old “adobe” building that has been lovingly restored and filled with modern art pieces.
